Mazamilta is a small alpine town in the Sierra Tigre
mountain range. The structures in the center of town are whitewashed adobe
trimmed beautifully with large timbers.
The weather after the first day we arrived has been rainy
and cold which was perfect weather to stay in bed all day yesterday to recover
from a serious bout with stomach problems. Although it could be anything we
have eaten along the way it felt like a quick flu complete with chills. We were
thankful for comfortable beds with lots of blankets and the steady beating of
the rain to keep us asleep. Luckily we both feel much better today and have
taken up the habit of eating a couple of meals a day again, though much tamer
selections without the hot peppers and salsas that we had been dowsing every
morsel with before.
Sunday as we arrived in Mazamilta it looked like it was
going to be quite the party town for New Year’s Eve but the hard rain last
night shut down the electricity so the revelers were very quiet, another thing
for the Brownings to appreciate given our less than partying mood. It was so
dark in the hotel that you couldn’t see in your hand in front of your face. The
hotel owner brought us a little candle which seemed to warm our little concrete
room nicely, in fact I have lit it again this evening.
You wouldn’t imagine travelling in Mexico would requires long underwear, top & bottoms, a warm sweatshirt, jacket, mittens and hat, but I’m sure glad I packed all of the above. I’m wearing it all now, under the covers! No one has heating here, it’s unheard of…luckily this higher altitude lodgings do have hot running water.
Tomorrow we will venture at least two hours away from this
beautiful Pueblo Magico. We will go through Zamora where we must transfer buses
to get to Patzcuaro. Depending on our tummies we may need to spend the night
before going the other two plus hours to Patzcuaro. What goes up must come
down, and in this case the road will wind down before winding up again!
Mexico has designated tourist-worthy towns full of history and natural beauty as magic towns. We have visited a few of them over the years: Bacalar (Quitana Roo), Comala (Colima), Izamal & Valladolid (Yucatan), San Cristobal De Las Casa (Chiapas), and Taxco (Guerrero). We will be going to a few more in the state of Michoacan in the next two weeks including Angangueo, Patzcuaro, Tlayacapan & Santa Clara del Cobre. We may even make it to Valle de Bravo in the state of Mexico if time allows. I wish I had known about Pueblos Magicos when I planned trips in the past as I can see from the map that we have passed by many not knowing what we were missing!
